I advise you from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, W. 5402, it appears that William M. Nance was born January 18, 1760 in Amelia County, Virginia.
He enlisted at the Court House of Amelia County, Virginia and served three months in 1777 in Captain Gabriel Fowlkes' Company, Colonel Viviam Brookin's Virginia Regiment; enlisted in February 1779 and served six months as Orderly Sergeant in Captain William Fitzgerald's Company, Colonel David Mason's Virginia Regiment, and was in the battle of Stono. He moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia in December 1780, and in 1781 served two months and twenty-One days in Captain Charles Williams' Virginia Company, and was at the Siege of York. He was allowed pension on his application executed September 17, 1832, while a resident of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He died November 8, 1843. The soldier married November 18, 1782, Elizabeth Thornton. She was allowed pension on her application executed September 23, 1844, at which time she was living in said Pittsylvania County, aged seventy-seven years.

State of Virginia, Pittsylvania County to wit
On this 17th day of September 1832 personally appeared in open Court before Setphen Coburn, John S Adams, William M. Williaming, & Robert Wilson, the court of Pittsylvania now sitting William M Nance a resident of Pittsylvania County & state of Virginia aged Seventy two years who living first duly sworn according to law both on his oath make the following decloration in order to obtain the benifit of the act of Congrep papid June 7th 1832 That he was born on the 18 January 1760 in the county of Amelia now Nottoway Va recording to his fathers register which is not in his papipion that he entered the service of the United States as a Substitute for Wm Mitchell in the year 1777 under Capt. Gabriel Fawlker Senr. John Knight Senr. and William Brookin Ensign at the courthouse of Amelia County Va and marched to Williamsburg and joined the regement under the command of Coln Vivian Brookin & after premaining there a short time was advised to Hampton where he joined the army under Command og General Thornton where he served for several months. the particular time not recollected but thinks it was not less than three months and was disbanded at Hampton by Colo Brookin without any regular discharge and returned home where he remained until early in the month of February 1779 when he was drafted and marched under Capt William Fitzgerald Jun. (charlen**by?) to Halifax Town North Carolina when he joined Colo. David Mason and marched through Hillsborough Salisbury North Carolina and joined Genl Lincoln at Home Camp South Carolina and fought a hard battle with the Brtish on the 20th of June 1779 in which he was engaged from the commencement to the end of which he marched back to the camp where he remained some time. knew Count Pulaskie, Genl. Parsons ** and from thence was marched to Camden South Carolina and disbanded in August 1779 after serving a Com. of six months during which time he was Orderly Sargent and was disbanded by Colo. Mason and *hirmed to Amelia Va. where he remained until the day of Dec. 1780 when he removed to the County of Pittsylvania where he has resided ever since and in the year 1781 he was drafted and marched from the county aforesaid under Capt Charles Williams Senr.? Dix or Hunt he does not recollect which to York Town VA where he was regularly engaged in the seige until the surrender two days after which he with the other sick of the troops from Pittsylvania was discharged by General Stephens which discharged is lost or mislaid.-- He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Subscribed Sworn to this 17th day of September 1832- Wm M. Nance
Son. We James Nance of blake County North Carolina and Thomas Hoskins residing in the county of Pittsylvania hereby certify that we are well acquanted with William M. Nance who has subscribed and Sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be seventy two year of age. that he has reputed and belived in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and that we concur in that opinion.

County Virg. are credible persons and that their ****ments are untitled credits.

Nance who served in the Revolutionary war, as a private Inscribed on the Roll at the rate of 49 Dollars -- Cents per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March, 1848. Certificate of Pension issued the 4 day of April 1849 and sent to Betty Robinson Richmond VA. Recorded on Roll of Pensioners under act February 2 1848 Page 174 Vol. 3.

Adams, William M. Williams & Robert Wilson, the court of Pittsylvania now Sitting William M. Nance a resident of Pittsylvania county & State of Virginia aged seventy two years who being first duly Sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benifit of the act of Cangrep papid? June 7th 1832. That he was born on the 18th January 1760 in the County of Amelia now Nottowa Va according to his fathers register which is not in his popipion? that he entered the service of the United States as a Substitute for Wm Mitchell in the year 1777 under Capt. Captain Pegram's (Formerly Captain Branch's) Company Virginia Light Artillery served in the 12 Regiment Virginia Infantry until accepted into the servive of the Confederate States about July 1, 1861, when it became Company K, 16th Regiment Virginia Infantry. By S.O. No. 62, A. & I. G. O., dated March 18, 1862 it was transferred to the artillery service. It served for a time in Colt's Batalion of Artillery, a temorary field of organization, which was composed of independent companies from various States.
