Henry Edward (P.D.) Nance, 83, of 
Bedford Va., died on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born January 8, 1926, in Bedford County, he was a son of the late Henry Grady Nance and Mary Frances Hubbard Nance. P.D. was a longtime member of Suck Spring Baptist Church. He also served in the United States Air Force during World War II. In addition to his parents, P.D. was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Gary Nance Sr.; two sisters, Ada Grace Nance Turner and Gladys Mildred Nance Wilkerson; and three brothers, Hubert M. "Mack" Nance, Glenn H. Nance and Francis D. "Jack" Nance. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise Marie Hooper Nance; two grandchildren, Thomas Gary Nance Jr. and his wife, Catherine, of Bedford, and Jennifer Renee Nance, of Roanoke; two greatgrandchildren, Tavion William Nance, of Roanoke, and Annabelle Elizabeth Nance, of Bedford; three sisters, Edna N. Murray, of Amherst, Betty Lou N. Layne and husband, Roger, of Bedford, and Mary Frances "Sue" N. Helenihi and husband, Clint, of California; a brother-in-law, John W. Wilkerson, of Bedford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2316 Atherholt Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24501. A celebration of P.D.'s life will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Suck Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Cox and the Rev. Jerry Parr officiating. Burial will follow in Suck Spring Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors given by American Legion Post #16. Dr. Robert Beverly Nance, ((My 2nd Uncle)), 95, of 800 King's Way Road, Martinsville, VA and formerly of Ridgeway, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Kings Grant. He was born in Radford on May 18, 1908, to Beverly D. and Lula Carr Nance. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lennie C. Nance in 1986.
Nance graduated from Berea College in Kentucky and received his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of North Carolina where he was a member of Pi Delta Phi and Tau Kappa Alpha honor societies. After teaching for a period at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., he took a teaching position at Radford College in 1944 where he was chairman of the foreign language department until his retirement in 1972.
After retiring he moved to Ridgeway and became a member and served as president of the Association of Retired Teachers of Martinsville and Henry County. He was a member of the Ridgeway Ruritan Club and the First Baptist Church of Ridgeway. Surviving is one daughter, Linda L. Nance of Ridgeway. A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway with the Rev. Gary Edwards officiating.

Wiley Thomas Nance Sr., 60, of 1032 Parkwood Place, Collinsville, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was born in Martinsville on Oct. 22, 1943, a son of Mary E. Thompson of Martinsville and the late Reuben Nance. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Rebecca Turner Nance of the home; three sons, Sgt. Wiley Thomas Nance Jr. of Ft. Knox, Ky., William Joseph Nance of Collinsville and Robert Andrew Nance of the home; one sister, Ralpholene Moore of Fieldale; one brother, Frank Nance of Fieldale; three nephews; and one niece. Nance was owner and operator of Piedmont Specialty Company in Collinsville. He served in the Air Force and was a member of Elks Lodge No. 1752 of Martinsville. He was a Baptist by faith. The funeral will held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Norris Funeral Services for one hour before the funeral Saturday and other times at the home. The funeral for Wiley Thomas Nance Sr., 60, who died on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, was held Saturday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. The Rev. Ron Mateer officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park with military rites by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County. The flag was presented by James Rogers. Pallbearers were: Don Martin, Hugh Hagood, Sammy Shelton, Reed Carter, Porky Ashbrook, Raymond Prillaman, Gary Thompson, Mike Lawless and Jim Frith.
