ARDENNE, John Forster Canmore - 77 died at his Seabright home, May, 1, 2001, after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Toronto, he was the only child of Malcolm Ardenne and his wife Rhea (Forster). He grew up in Tweed Ont., where his father was a forest engineer and graduated from Pickering College in Newmarket where he earned a scholarship to study English at Queens University in Kingston. He interrupted his studies in 1942, to join the Royal Canadian Navy where he served as an officer in Nova Scotia, Alberta and outside Canada watters off Nova Scotia, Following the war, he continued in the Navy, attaining the rank of Lt. Cmdr. serving in Operations Headquarters in the Naval Dockyard, Halifax. He retired in 1957. John resumed his studies at St. Mary's and Dalhousie Universities, graduating with a BA and Masters (Education) in 1968. He taught in several Halifax schools and the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology before joining the Nova Scotia Department of education in 1965. He took a three year leave of absence to become education officer for NewStart in P.E.I. before returning to the department in 1971, from which he retired as assistant director of teacher education in 1983. In his retirement, he was instrumental in helping raise community environmental awareness through his work with SMART (St. Margarets Bay Area Recycling Team) and was a member of Veterans Against Nuclear Arms. At home he took great pleasure in crafting fine woodwork and in cultivating roses in his greenhouse. He was also a long-time member of Theatre Arts Guild. John is survived by his uncle Geoggrey Ardenne, Montreal; his wife Louise (Porter); daughter Margaret, Seabright; sons, Michael and wife Nancy, Seabright; Timothy, Coquitlam and grandchildren, Arianna, Alexander and Sebastian (Coquitlam). The family will receive visitors on Friday, May 4 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Seabright. Cremation has taken place. To respect the wishes of the deceased, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Mount St. Vincent University Scolarship Fund or palliative care.
