Notes for Ralph Leeming WHITNEY:

Hello Edith,
To explain a little more about all those addresses for Eoin in WW11. ....Eoin was born in Toronto on April 3, 1920, where his father, Ralph Leeming Whitney, Royal Can. Army WW1, was finishing studies in Theology after returning from Overseas with his Irish bride, Ethel Evangeline Alford, (born in Irvinestown, County Fermanagh, Ireland). They moved to a small place east of Edmonton called Innisfree. Later, they were in Strathmore, east of Calgary. From there they moved to Red Deer, Alberta, (about 1926, I think), where Ralph got a teaching position in the Public School system. (Before WW1, Ralph, born in Atherly, Ontario, had been teaching school in rural Alberta in Ukrainian settlements). I presume that in both Innisfree and Strathmore, he was with a small country congregation in the Methodist Church. Meanwhile, Oran had been born, (Oct. 15, 1921). So, the two children were close, and probably in later years Oran kept track of letters written home to Red Deer. (There were two more children born to Ralph and Peggy, as Ethel Evangeline was known. These were Arthur Dermot (sp?) 1927, I think, and Ann Elizabeth born March 9, 1934. Peggy died when Ann was just 4 months old, and Derry drowned in Sylvan Lake, (1938, think).
Eoin enlisted, or at least tried to, in the Canadian Army, but got tired of waiting, and so tried the Airforce which took him right away. So then, he was away from home and writing letters back to Red Deer. These came from various places in Canada and later Overseas. I have asked some people I know here if they can put the places and ranks in some kind of chronological order as I am completely clueless.
So Eoin got home from Overseas and after visiting family and friends in Red Deer, he was soon back in Edmonton to continue his studies at the University of Alberta. However, I think it was November (1945, of course) by then, and regular classes were well underway. There were servicemen and women all over campus, all in uniform, of course, because there was nothing else to wear. Someone had the terrific idea of starting a separate set of classes held evenings and weekends. It was called the January College and by September of 1946, this group was ready to join the rest of us for the regular year of September to April.......... At some point I had noticed this handsome man in the Arts Building just outside the door of the Math. Dept. and had learned that he would be joining our small group going into third year of Honours Math. in Sept 1946. ...... We graduated in May of 1948 and were married at Wesley United Church in Calgary on the 28th of May. We had a short honeymoon in Banff and at the Whitney cabin on Sylvan Lake, and then continued to collect required documents for living and working in the United States, where Eoin was to work on a project for the US Navy, ( the Bateman Project). This was at Pasadena, California, close to Los Angeles. and we were there for a year. Then a Putman scholarship in Mathematics took him to Harvard. It wws 1949 by then. Stephen arrived in 1950
Well, must run. Love, Marion
