THE JAMES WAY ANDERSON Family: by Gordon Babbitt
James and Jane Anderson of County Monoghan, Ireland, emigrated to New York c. 1792, One of their children, William (1786-1869) came in 1803 to Ameliasburg Twp. and settled at Massassaga. On July 1, 1806 William married Mary WAY (1791-186?) This union produced 12 children but 2 boys and one girl died young.
James Way Anderson (1832-1914) the youngest of the 12 children, resided on Lot 70, Con. 1, Ameliasburg. This property had been purchased by James' father William, c. 1852 from George Cunningham, who had received it from King George III in 1803. In 1857 James married Theodocia Brickman. They had four children:Edwrad born 1859, Frederick born 1862. Mary born 1865, and Harry (1872-1931). Both Fred and Mary died prior to their 30th birthdays.
James, a considerable entrepreneur, established a cheese factory called the"Baside Cheese Factory" in 1870, built a ferry boat (with Captain Porte) in 1879 called "The Mary Ethel", raised purebred Percheron horses and patented several appliances. He was also a lieutenant in the 16th Battalion, Rednersville o. for over 20 years.
James' son Harry farmed the east half of Lo,t 70, Con. 1, Ameliasburgh, while his brother Ed farmed te west half of Lot 70. Harry married Gertrude Peck (1876-1955) c 1900 and this union produced one child, Mary Eleanor. I never knew my grandfather Harry, however I have been told he was a kind, compassionate, quiet humoured man, well respected in the communty.
Mary Eleanor Anderson married Francis Sherman Babbit (1905-1973). This union produced two sons William Sherman and Harry Gordon. Mary Babbitt resides on Lot 69 con. 1. The younger son Gordon resides with his wife Corinne FARGEY and ther three children, Mary Jane, Julie, James, in the original James Way Anderson homestead on Lot 70. William with his wife Shirley WAGNER and their three children, Davi, Marion and Donald, live on bayside, where James had his dock and berthed the "Mary Ethel".
