John Steen came to Washington County, Pennsylvania with his parents arou
nd 1780. He was raised in Washington County and married there; later movi
ng to Beaver County in 1804, and permanently locating near Bridgewate
r. He served during the War of 1812; was enlisted for five years and compl
eted his term of service at the Arsenal, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvani
a. He was a Sergeant in Biddle's Corps of Artillery, which fact is shown f
rom his land warrant. He served as Justice of the Peace for the borou
gh of Bridgewater, Pennsylvania, and was ruling elder in the United Presby
terian Church for many years. He died at the residence of his son, Capta
in Hugh B. Steen, in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania and was bur
ied in the Greenwood Cemetery, New Castle, Pennsylvania.
