Notes for Richard STEEN:

Information on the Steen Family was taken from the books titled: THE STE
EN FAMILY in Europe and America, Volumes I and II, written by the Revere
nd Moses D. A. Steen, D.D.

In the days of religious persecution in Scotland, near the close of the re
ign of Charles II, many Non-Conformists left Scotland in order to escape p
ersecution and imprisonment. Among them there was a man by the name of STE
EN, a Scotch Covenanter minister, who came into Ireland with Oliver Cromwe
ll about 1649. It is believed his name was Richard, but of this we cann
ot be certain.

He settled first in Killinsky, in County Down, and afterwards located at A
ntrim, in the County Antrim, Province of Ulster, Ireland. They may have li
ved on the old "Green Hill farm", which is about eight Irish miles from Co
leraine, near the bank of the River Bann, in the County of Antrim, Provin
ce of Ulster, and forms a part of the tract called "The Vow."

The Reverend Moses Steen visited Ireland in 1896 (Volume I, Page 59-60), a
nd found an old lady whose mother was a Steen, and whose son cultivated t
he old farm. The Reverend also located near the river an old cemetery whi
ch held the grave of John Steen, who was born in 1755 and died on Februa
ry 14, 1835; and his wife Catharine Steen, who was born in 1749 and died N
ovember 9, 1829.

After studying a little Irish history and going back to Compton's Encyclop
edia, I found that Oliver Cromwell actually came from England. I believe O
liver Cromwell was born in England and was basically given the right to ru
le Ireland. He went to Ireland with a band of his men to reek havoc and ru
le over the Irish people.

Is it not possible, if Oliver Cromwell came from England and he brought wi
th him a band of his own men (who had known Oliver for quite some time), t
hat Richard Steen would have come from England too?
