The Steen Family in Europe and America, Volume I, Pages 59 through 61, sta
tes: James Steen probably came to the British Colonies of America, about 1
755, along with his brothers. They may have landed in New York, but soon a
fterwards made their way into Pennsylvania, where they continued to resi
de for a while.
James Steen later moved to the South, and permanently located in the Uni
on District of South Carolina. It was said he was a man of great energ
y, a stanch Presbyterian, and an enthusiastic patriot. When the Revolution
ary War broke out, he joined the Colonial Army of Volunteers (Whig borderm
en), attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, and was killed in the batt
le of Kings Mountain, October 7, 1780; while fighting bravely in defen
se of his country, leading his men to victory.
